The British call a sedan a "saloon" as if you can get drinks served on the hood or something. It actually comes form their name for the train car we call the "Pullman" where you can sleep. Hopefully, this from it's size and luxuriousness and not from its ability to sleep a dozen.

It was one of many examples of stretching a maker's signature car into a four-door version.  To me, this almost always makes them look better because the proportions are more in harmony, but that's just me.
